Mom’s on the Trail - Introducing Baby to Nature

Kathryn Dunnings of Bozeman, MT didn’t let having a baby get in the way of her outdoor adventures and hiking excursions. She even managed to go on a 10 mile hike 2 days before she gave birth (what an inspiration!). Having a baby actually increased Kathryn’s connection to nature and strengthened her bond with her child. Kathryn shares what it’s like getting outside on trail with your baby for the first time:

As a new mom when you first have an infant it might seem intimidating to get on the trail, but

just get outside and go for it!

It will be much easier than you realize. Having a sling or a wrap so you can be hands free will make it easier to get used to walking with your baby.

Start with a slow stroll on a quiet and easy trail to learn how to move with this new body you are carrying and build that connection with your child. It is a whole new world you will be learning about and being able to be in a quiet place hiking in nature will provide you the opportunity to have a clear head and embrace this new way of hiking as a mom.

Pay attention to your body as a whole and how your baby adjusts positions and how that impacts you. I guarantee you will be in pain at some point,

...don’t ignore the pains because they will get worse if you don’t make adjustments.

Oftentimes you need to just slightly shift the way your baby is sleeping or adjust the straps on your pack/sling. You may notice that the extra weight of your child may impact your feet. Consider getting a footbed or insert for your shoes down the road for more support. ToughCutie socks are a great bet as they provide arch support.

Over time you will become more comfortable on the trail as a new mom and walking with your baby will become second nature.

It will build your connection with yourself and your child and inspire other families to get on trail with young children. Being on trail with your baby will help you learn more about life as a new mother while being immersed in nature.
